Requirements for Renting

Are there age requirements for renting?

Yes. Since fees, permissible truck types and minimum age requirements may vary by location, it's best to find the underage requirement in the city where you are renting prior to picking up your rental.

In most U.S. states, Budget Truck Rental locations rent to customers 24 years and older. Budget Truck Rental also may rent to customers between the ages of 21-23 with the following requirements:

  • Renters 21-23 must present two valid forms of acceptable identification and a valid driver's license and credit/debit card.
  • At time of rental, an additional $6-per-day underage surcharge for these drivers will be applied.
  • If a renter wishes to add an additional driver to the rental policy, the second driver must be 21 or older, and present a valid, acceptable driver’s license and valid credit or debit card. Some locations do not accept debit cards.
  • A one-time fee of $5 will be added to the cost of the rental for additional drivers. Spouses are considered additional drivers and are subject to the additional driver charge.

Other Minimum Age Requirements

  • Military customers with travel orders may rent at the minimum age of 18.
  • Select corporate customers and military customers may be exempt from the underage fee and have a minimum age requirement of 18. Check with your account representative to see if your company account is eligible.
  • Government employees over the age of 18 traveling on government orders in the U.S. may rent from Budget without a surcharge.
  • U.S. Budget licensee-owned truck locations’ minimum age requirements vary on local rentals, however, most allow a minimum age of 21-23 for a small surcharge.
  • For any Budget Truck location, contact the location directly to verify the minimum age requirements.

May someone else drive a truck that I rent?

Yes, you may add additional drivers to your rental agreement when you pick up your rental. At most U.S. locations, additional drivers must present a valid, acceptable driver's license, a valid and acceptable credit/debit card, be at least 21 years old (see above for minimum age exceptions), and be required to pay a one time additional driver's fee of $5. At most locations, exemptions from the additional driver fee include:

  • A qualified employer or co-employee, while engaged in a business activity with a renter renting on their employer's Budget corporate contracted rate.
  • The licensed companion driver of a non-licensed renter with a disability. Other additional drivers are subject to the additional driver fee.
  • Exceptions to the underage policy for additional drivers: U.S. licensee-owned truck locations may have separate requirements for local rentals. Please contact the location directly to verify additional drive and fee requirements.

What kind of credentials do I need?

In the U.S. and Canada, drivers must present a valid driver’s licensee, a major credit/debit card, and one other valid form of identification. All items must be in the driver's name.

At least one of the following forms of identification is also required for all rentals. All forms of identification must include a name and address and must match the name and address on the renter's driver's license.

The following are acceptable additional forms of identification:

  • Valid U.S. passport or current U.S. military identification card.
  • Current employer-issued photo identification.
  • Current vehicle insurance card.
  • Current copy (within the last 60 days) of the customer's cellular phone bill, home telephone bill, bank statement or utility bill.

More credentials also may be required. See the terms and conditions on your confirmation page/e-mail for information on your specific pick-up location.

Do you require a deposit to rent a truck?

Yes. Your deposit type, amount and method of payment will vary by Budget Truck location.

Credit and Debit Card Rules

Generally at the time of a U.S. rental, we require a credit card hold of $150 for local truck rentals. For one-way truck rentals, we require a credit card hold of $150 and the estimated cost of the rental.

In the event that you choose not to return your truck on or before your scheduled return date, we may place an additional hold on your card (depending on how long you keep the truck) to cover expected rental charges. Upon your return of the truck, all holds will be released, and the actual cost of the rental will be charged. Please note that your bank may take up to two weeks to post the released credit hold to your card. Unfortunately, we cannot be held responsible for any returned checks due to debit card hold processing.

For full details, be sure to read the helpful terms and conditions that appear during the online reservation process and on your reservation confirmation page and/or e-mail.

Cash Rules

Budget accepts cash as an acceptable form of payment.

Am I required to take the insurance and protection products?

No, but you are responsible for the truck in the event of damage. You should check with your respective insurance company to see if you have ample coverage while renting. In the event you don’t have proper coverage, Budget sells a variety of optional Insurance and protection plans for your truck rental. Click Here to learn more.

Does my own insurance protect me in the event of an accident?

Given the vast number of insurers and policies, it is extremely difficult for us to know which entitlements accompany your given policy. We strongly recommend that you contact your insurance company to verify your coverages when renting a truck. In the event you don’t have proper protection, Budget sells a variety of optional Insurance and protection plans for your rental.

  • Always verify what coverages you have with your personal, auto, home, credit card or AAA insurance personally. Never assume you’re covered without asking.
  • Ask your auto insurance agent about your existing coverage. Specifically find out if you’re covered for a rental truck that’s over 8,600 lbs. gross vehicle weight or under 25,500 gross vehicle weight. Your agent's contact information is typically listed on the insurance card provided to you when you purchase or renew your policy. Always keep it handy!
  • Ask your homeowners or renters insurance agent to verify what coverages you have to protect your household cargo. Specifically inquire as to the extent in which you’re covered while your goods are in transit between your current and new home.
  • To verify whether you’re covered by the credit card you plan to use for your truck rental, call the credit card company directly before renting your Budget truck. Most credit cards offer a toll-free phone number on the back of the card. Specifically state that the rental is not for an automobile, but for a moving truck.

What are the benefits of purchasing the plans?

The benefits of the plans vary by location. If you have questions about a specific plan, please check with the renting location or contact us in the U.S. toll-free at 800-527-0700.

The purchase of any of these plans is optional and is not required in order to rent a Budget truck.

Notice: This is only a summary of the Optional Insurance and Protection Plans; additional details are explained in the brochures available at the rental counter. The specific terms, conditions and exclusions thereof are subject to all provisions, limitations and exclusions contained in the policies issued by ACE American Insurance Company, one of the U.S.-based subsidiaries of ACE Limited (NYSE : ACE). “ACE” and the ACE logo are service marks of the ACE Group, which is comprised of ACE Limited and its subsidiaries.

Your personal insurance policy providing coverage on an owned vehicle, or other personal property policy, may provide additional coverage, and to that extent, the insurance coverage described above may provide a duplication of your personal coverage.

Do you offer towing insurance that covers the vehicle being towed?

Yes! Auto Tow Protection (ATP) provides renters with coverage for damage to their personal automobile – while it’s being towed by the rental truck using a car carrier or tow dolly also rented from Budget.

ATP offers coverage for loss of, or damage to, the renter’s personal automobile resulting from:

  • Fire or explosion
  • Flood
  • Windstorm or hail
  • Landslide
  • Damage or overturn of the rental truck or towing equipment
  • Collision of the rental truck or towing equipment with another vehicle or object

ATP provides coverage for loss of, or damage to, the renter’s personal automobile on an actual cash value basis up to $15,000. There is a $250 deductible per loss. See ATP terms and conditions or see related brochure at the rental counter.

Do you offer business insurance and protections plans?

Absolutely! Before your next business move, review Budget Truck Rental’s competitively priced optional protection plans and popular protection options. Remember that, as a commercial truck rental customer, you’re not required to purchase a plan if you can provide a "Certificate of Insurance.” In that case, the Certificate must be approved and on file in the Budget Safety Department prior to the rental. See your Commercial Account Manager for more details or Click Here to review protection plans in detail.

Will you accept any other form of identification in lieu of a driver’s license?

In lieu of a valid driver's license, U.S. rental locations will accept traffic citations or summonses issued by officials in these seven states: Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. The citation only will be accepted up until the court appearance date shown on the citation or summons. A customer who presents a citation/summons in lieu of a driver's license is required to present a second means of personal identification with a signature on it. Any second means of I.D. with a signature is acceptable, such as a department store card, passport, library card or company I.D. with a signature.

While I’m Renting

What should I do if I'm involved in an accident?

First, contact the police to complete an accident report, then immediately contact the location from which the truck was rented. You can find location phone information on the front or back of your rental agreement. If the rental location is closed, in the U.S., call 24-hour roadside assistance toll-free at 800-551-5998.

What happens if I don’t return my truck on the designated return date?

If the truck isn’t returned on or before the due date, Budget may obtain additional credit card hold authorizations to cover expected rental charges. You MUST have Budget Truck Rental’s express authorization to extend any due date by calling 1-800-GO-BUDGET. Otherwise, Budget Truck Rental may be forced to enact all recovery efforts including seizing the truck and/or reporting the truck to the authorities as ”stolen.”

What should I do if I have problems with my truck?

Before you start driving, take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the truck's equipment and operation, including heat and A/C, radio, lights, windshield wipers, spare tire, seat belts and door locks, and gas tank access. Getting distracted trying to figure out those things while driving can be dangerous. Don’t wait until the fuel warning light goes on to think about buying gas, especially if you don’t know how far it is between gas stations. If, in the unlikely event that your truck malfunctions on a major thoroughfare, lock the doors, turn on the hazard lights and, if you have a cell phone, call the police or, in the U.S., phone 24-hour roadside assistance at 800-423-1640. Don’t leave your truck. Wait in the truck for service or the police to arrive. Accepting help from strangers, no matter how well intended, is not a good idea unless you can’t call for help and they can. If, in the unlikely event that an emergency light illuminates on your control panel, don’t ignore it. Use good judgment about whether you can get back to our location safely and don’t hesitate to call our 24-hour roadside assistance in the U.S. at 800-423-1640.

Can I change where or when I return my truck after I have picked it up?
